Tree Trimming

Trained and Certified Arborists

When most people think of “tree work,” they imagine pruning and trimming—the most common and often misunderstood part of tree care. Most urban trees will need some pruning throughout their lives, but not all pruning is beneficial. In fact, poor pruning probably damages more trees than almost any other threat they face.

We help our clients understand their trees by explaining the whats, whys, and hows of tree care, including pruning. At Legacy Tree, we know that pruning is both a science and an art. Over the decades, standards of practice have changed as our industry has learned more about the trees entrusted to our care. How much living tissue is removed—and from where—directly affects the tree’s future. By staying current on the science and best practices of tree care, Legacy’s arborists make sure your tree gets the treatment it deserves.

Structural Pruning for Young Trees

We specialize in several aspects of pruning, starting with structural pruning for young trees. Trees grow differently from people, and precise pruning when a tree is young helps it develop the strongest possible form as it matures. Structural pruning is like school for trees—it gives them the early guidance they need to grow healthy and reach their full potential.

Pruning Adult Trees

Adult trees need a different approach, and in general, less is better. Every cut removes living tissue, which creates a wound the tree must repair, and it also removes leaves—the tree’s source of energy. For this reason, every pruning cut should have a clear purpose. For example, reducing the likelihood of horizontal branch failure by carefully removing small amounts from the far tip is a case of minimal removal with maximum benefit.

Pruning Older Trees

Older trees may start to pose safety concerns as branches die or decay. Managing older trees requires a thoughtful approach, often including pruning. The goal is usually to reduce canopy size while keeping as much of the tree’s mass as the client’s risk tolerance allows.

Removing Dead or Problematic Branches

Dead, broken, or otherwise problematic branches also need attention. Legacy Tree’s arborists are trained and equipped to handle these situations safely. Large limbs are carefully lowered to the ground, and all debris is removed, with worker safety and property protection as top priorities.

Professional Expertise

All of our staff are experienced, certified arborists who understand how pruning fits into the bigger picture of tree care. They assess the health and structure of your trees, consider the surrounding landscape and property, and recommend pruning work that makes sense. Sometimes, the best advice is no pruning at all—if it’s not broken, don’t fix it!
