Tree Planting

Trained and Certified Arborists

One of the most important events in the life of an urban tree is planting day. This is where past mistakes can be avoided and the course of the tree’s future is set. It is a brief opening into the otherwise closed world of the root system — and the root system, by the way, is the key to the whole tree question. Trees are sedentary organisms; they don’t get up and walk around, no matter how much you believe in ents. The more a tree’s roots are disturbed, moved, repotted, allowed to dry out, flooded nearly past recovery, or jammed into a small hole surrounded by brick-like soil… well, let’s just say it’s very possible to mess up a tree at planting.

Legacy Tree knows how to plant trees correctly. We know that selecting the right species for the site matters, because it must be genetically suited to the conditions provided. We also know that inspecting the actual specimen for defects — and rejecting poor nursery stock — is how we avoid leaving clients with ticking time-bomb problem trees.

We know the root crown must sit at the soil surface once all the dust and water settle. Trees planted too deeply often struggle, as roots suffocate in low-oxygen soil. We also know that circling roots at the edge of the root ball must be addressed immediately — waiting is not a good option. Left untreated, these poorly positioned roots can slowly strangle a tree years after planting. Our team is trained and prepared to perform the necessary root work to correct bad root structure at the start.

Tree planting isn’t rocket science, but it is tree science. Rocket science is precise and unforgiving. Tree science is messier and allows a little margin for error — but certain fundamentals are critical if a tree is going to remain healthy and happy in the landscape for decades to come.
