Let’s face it — trees are big plants with a lot of leaves, and they use a lot of water. That’s a simple biological fact rooted in the physics of how water moves from the soil into the air. Whew! Science…
Legacy Tree understands this science, along with the principles and practices involved in designing effective irrigation systems for trees. Our goal is to deliver water out to the younger roots, where most of the absorbing roots grow. These tiny roots act like sponges, and in many ways the entire tree takes up water much like one. Millions of small “sponges” spread through the shallow soil around the tree allow water to be absorbed from a wide area — not just a few spots near the base of the trunk. Yet we often see trees with only two or three emitters placed within a foot of the trunk. Yes, those trees may survive, but they are not thriving and are unlikely to live long, healthy lives.
What matters most to a tree is the volume of water available to support photosynthesis. That volume depends on how much soil is holding water, which in turn depends on how much of the soil surface actually receives and absorbs irrigation. If water never reaches a portion of the soil surface — or doesn’t soak in — that soil remains dry, and dry soil doesn’t help the equation.
Our irrigation approach uses tubing with built-in, in-line emitters spaced evenly along its length. Typically, we install the tubing in a loose spiral around the tree, extending out to the edge of the branch tips — the so-called drip line. In irregularly shaped landscapes, the tubing can be cut and connected in many different configurations, allowing us to provide thorough coverage across the critical root zone.
We program irrigation timers for longer run times, usually only one or two days per week. When sufficient soil volume is thoroughly soaked, trees can tolerate longer intervals between watering. Smaller soil volumes require more frequent irrigation. We account for these variables when setting schedules and also ask clients to provide feedback, so adjustments can be made if something is missed.
When necessary, we can completely redesign an existing system, including installing new valves and running new hard lines. While we are not a sprinkler company and do not install or repair conventional turf irrigation systems, we can help convert water-wasting turf setups into efficient irrigation systems that support trees and other well-adapted, lower-water plants.
As with all aspects of Legacy Tree’s work, we assess, adapt, and refine our approach over time — continuing to lead the way in creating tree-friendly landscapes in a hot, dry environment.
We carefully trim and prune trees to reduce risk, encourage healthy growth, and aesthetic balance—preserving both safety and beauty in your outdoor spaces
When a tree becomes hazardous or must be removed, our crews perform removals safely, efficiently, and with minimal disruption to the surrounding landscape.
Our certified arborists assess tree health through detailed inspection and modern diagnostics, providing clear recommendations for treatment and care.
Certified Cabling and Bracing sustains valuable trees by correcting poor structural development. Our arborists install static or dynamic support systems to reinforce weak branch attachments, reduce stress on vulnerable points, and improve long-term structural integrity.
Our experts diagnose and treat pest infestations and diseases with environmentally responsible methods, restoring balance and protecting the longevity of your trees and plants.
We provide comprehensive tree care for commercial properties, ensuring safety, beauty, and long-term health across business campuses, HOAs, apartment complexes, and shared spaces.
We offer comprehensive tree care including pruning, removals, planting, disease and pest management, irrigation maintenance, and landscape design.
Yes — Legacy Tree Company is fully licensed and insured for all residential and commercial tree work.
We proudly serve Albuquerque, Corrales, Los Ranchos, Rio Rancho, Placitas, Tijeras/Cedar Crest, and Santa Fe.
Most trees benefit from professional pruning every 2–3 years to promote health, structure, and safety — though frequency can vary based on species and site conditions.
Yes — our team of 10+ certified arborists can identify the cause of leaf loss, discoloration, or decay, and provide targeted treatment plans.
Trees that are dead, hazardous, structurally unsound, or interfering with structures may need removal. Our team can assess your tree and recommend the safest option.
Absolutely — all team members undergo extensive safety training and follow TSIA and ISA standards for safe, responsible tree care.
We recycle and repurpose as much material as possible, from mulch to firewood, to minimize environmental impact.
We focus on long-term tree health, responsible removal only when necessary, and Eco-conscious landscape practices that support a resilient urban forest.
Yes — Legacy Tree Company provides complimentary estimates for general tree work. However, our team of 10+ certified arborists is trained to diagnose complex tree health issues, which may require a paid evaluation or consultation depending on the situation. This ensures you receive a thorough, science-based assessment when your trees need expert attention.
During peak seasons (spring and summer), it’s best to schedule 2–3 weeks in advance.
